The university was established in 1975 as Avadh University and later renamed Dr. Rammanohar Lohia Avadh University in 1993–94. Located in Ayodhya, Dr. Rammanohar Lohia Avadh University is an affiliating state university recognised by the UGC and accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a ‘B’ Grade.
The university offers programme like BTech, MSW, BLib, MEd, BBA, BCA, and many more at UG, PG, PGD, Vocational, Certificate, and PhD courses across multiple departments (Economics and Rural Development, History, Culture and Archaeology, Physics and Electronics, Law, Education, Social Work). Since its inception, it has been working on providing quality education and introducing new programmes for students which help create new and wide variety of career options. Currently, the university has 5 lakh students enrolled in regular and private programmes at nine residential PG departments, the on-campus Institute of Engineering, and 600 affiliated colleges spread over seven districts (Ayodhya, Sultanpur, Ambedkarnagar, Lucknow, Barabanki, Baharaich, and Gonda).
