was laid on 16 August, 1960 under the Dispersal Scheme-with the joint participation of the State and Central Governments. Late Haripada Biswas was the founder secretary of this college. Initially it was named ‘New Barrackpore College’. Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, after whom the college has its present name, was a great educationist with a vision. It was he who wanted universal literacy; he spoke of ‘basic education’ and ‘utility education’; he advocated the concept of empowerment of women; he wanted the development of indigenous industries through cultivation of entrepreneurial acumen of the educated youth. In the true spirit of Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, the college from its nascent state, has tried to propagate the ideals of this great man and the motto illustrates this; “Service, Knowledge, Sacrifice”. Acharya Prafulla Chandra College student union publishes annual magazines”Jagaran”. The College also has a Museusm “Acharya Prafulla Chandra Smriti Sangrahalaya”. APC College admissions are done on the basis of the merit list publushed by the college.
The college is successfully running degree courses in more than 25 subjects at both Honours and General level, three vocational or Major courses, five Post Graduate courses and three distant learning centres such as Department of Distant Learning (Kalyani University), Netaji Subhas Open University and IGNOU. The requirement for a more job-oriented curriculum is addressed carefully by introducing a mixture of Honours degree courses, vocational courses such as Advertising, Sales Promotion & Sales Management (ASPV) and Industrial Fish & Fisheries (IFFV) as well as Post Graduate courses. In last four years three subjects were upgraded to Honours level. They are i) Food & Nutrition, ii) Education and iii) Human Development. APC College Computer Centre (DOEACC) provides opportunity to O, A and B level computer education.

Acharya Prafulla Chandra College (APCC)Â offers admissions in the disciplines of science and arts both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

APCC offers six courses in M.Sc and 2 courses in M.A at PG level. The duration of these courses is 2 years and admission would be offered on the basis of the merit of marks obtained in the last qualifying examination of Honours course.

Acharya Prafulla Chandra College, Application Process
Application to the college can be made in online mode and no printed form will be accepted.
Students can fill up the online form through link provided on the college website after official notification for admissions.
A fee of Rs.150/- for PG courses and Rs. 130/- for UG courses and Service Charges should be remitted through payment gateway.
They are advised to keep a print of the form submitted online for future reference.
The college grants Free Studentship/Half-free Studentship to poor but meritorious students. Applications for Free Studentship must be addressed to the Principal in the prescribed form before a notified date. Boys and girls who have secured at least 50% and 45% marks respectively in the last qualifying examination are eligible to put in their application. At least 15% of the total students of the college are granted concession. Students from Scheduled Castes and Tribes as well as from Other Backward Classes and Minority Communities are entitled to special stipends. For this they have to properly fill in prescribed forms and send them through the Principal to concerned government officials authorized to release these grants.
But here is a word of caution. Students enjoying scholarships, stipends, Full-free /Half-free studentship may find their privileges withdrawn (i) if they show unsatisfactory academic progress or are guilty of misconduct; (ii) if they remain absent from college on grounds other than illness, and (iii) if they get involved in something that is likely to tarnish the name of the college, or misbehave with teachers or fellow students.
From 2014, the Students’ Union also has introduced a Merit Scholarship Scheme for the meritorions but poor students. The highest marks securing students of second year and third year classes of both B.A. and B.Sc. streams will get a scholarship equivalent to six months’ college fees.
The college has a Boys’ hostel for SC/ST/OBC students of this district set up in this college by the Backward Class Welfare Department of the Govt. of West Bengal. The boarding facility is available for 80 students.
The college has a girls’ hostel facility which provides good hostel accommodation for the students with a capacity of 80 students.
The college has a Wi-Fi facility for the students and staff.
The college library has a rich collection of textbooks, reference books, journals, magazines, CDs, newspapers, etc. to provide various types of information to its users.
